Akira Maruyama
Akira Maruyama, Managing Executive Officer and Head of Overseas Restaurant and Retail Business, quit the first company he joined after graduating after working there for three years. He was then posted to Malaysia for two years as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer. After that, he spent time wandering overseas, but returned to Japan in order to learn a trade. Mr. Maruyama became fascinated with sushi when he joined a company that operated conveyor-belt sushi restaurants. He later served in successive positions including president at the aforementioned sushi restaurant management company, where he deepened his management experience and sushi expertise.
When Mr. Maruyama saw the news that the SEN SEN SUSHI locations operated by our Group company were thriving in Hong Kong, it brought back the memories and passion from his days of living recklessly overseas, and he decided to join the company. Mr. Maruyama joined the PPIH Group in January 2023. Currently, he is working hard every day to fine-tune the Restaurant and Retail Business, including SEN SEN SUSHI, and to prepare for new restaurants.
Mr. Maruyama's work motto is to maintain a good team atmosphere. After a bitter experience before joining the PPIH Group, when his team collapsed due to conceited, high-pressure behavior toward subordinates, he has become conscious of praising the good points of his subordinates and maintaining solid communication with them.
His hobbies are running marathons and mountain climbing. He says he has climbed Mt. Fuji 20 times. He has also summited Mt. Kinabalu in Malaysia three times, which is higher than Mt. Fuji, and has been to the base camp of the Annapurna massif in Nepal, which is over 5,000 meters above sea level. Recently, he has been participating in half-marathons, and is very active in both his personal and professional life. He said, "Through mountain climbing and marathons, I have learned that you can always achieve your goal if you proceed step-by-step, even if it seems difficult at first. I have also acquired the mental strength to not run away when the going gets tough."
His favorite, most-quoted part of The Source is Precept 1 of the Six Precepts of Our Management Philosophy, which states, "We commit ourselves to doing business in a manner that is unselfish, 100% honest, and grounded in a strong sense of morality and purpose." He noted that everyone has moments when his or her selfishness makes an appearance, and that this precept cautions against that.
